Hey All!
This thread is for any and all Dean (Young Iolaus) fans out there. I mainly just wanted to write down a few of my thoughts about the movies he's done since he has been in Young Hercules.
I certainly welcome any who have seen these movies to share their thoughts about them. You are also welcome to talk about any of Dean's roles in movies that he did before he was in Young Hercules as well. I myself haven't had a chance to see any of his earlier movies yet though.
If you wish to discuss other things about Dean I suggest and welcome you to start a new thread here on the OOC board.
Anyhooo - the 2 movies of his that I know that he has done since Young Hercules are: When Love Comes and Snakeskin. Warning: For any who haven't seen either of these movies yet the rest of this post will contain major spoilers about these 2 movies. If you don't wish to know what happens I suggest that you stop reading right now.
Moving on - the first movie that Dean did after Young Hercules was When Love Comes. This movie had an interesting theme for its story, but I thought that it was put together rather oddly, and parts of it were a bit boring at times. This however was not at all due to Dean though. His performance was excellent and I thought he did a wonderful job portraying his character in this movie.
Anyway - in this movie Dean portrays a Gay/Bisexual young man who seems to be trying to come terms with his sexuality, and struggles with the idea of being in a serious committed relationship. He has just started a relationship with an older gay man, but at the beginning of the movie he is also involved with a young woman. Sound a bit confusing? It really is. You just have to watch this movie for yourself and get through these first confusing scenes before the plot of the movie really emerges.
Okay, big spoiler here - this movie is definitely not for younger viewers. This movie is rated R, but it definitely is not what we Americans would think is appropriate for an R rated movie. In fact the 2nd scene of the movie contains a fairly graphic (heterosexual) sex scene, in which Dean has sex with one of his 2 female friends. The 2 girls start out topless while making out, and later it eventually becomes just Dean having sex with the blonde girl while the other girl watches them. Unlike American movies this scene does not leave much to the imagination at all.
I am sorry if I have offended anyone who hasn't had a chance to see this movie yet, but I swear to you that this is exactly what happens in it. So you've had your fair warning. If you don't want to see Dean in a role such as this you should definitely not watch this movie.
Luckily however the movie tames down after this scene and then gets to the plot, and here it is. Shortly after Dean's scene with the girls, we meet the older guy that Dean is dating. Thankfully he isn't terribly old. By older I mean in his late 30s to mid 40s.
Next we seen Dean go to a concert where his 2 female friends, who make up their own band and are trying to make it big, are playing at a local gay bar. Major usage of drugs & alcohol here as we watch Dean get sloshed. Later we see him hook up with some random guy, and it is clearly implied that the 2 of each other give each other oral sex. Thankfully this isn't as graphic as the earlier scene.
Moving on, after the scene at the club we go back to Dean's boyfriend who is welcoming his female girlfriend (f*g hag) from America, who as it happens, used to be a big hit singer in the US - or so we are told at least. Dean comes in a drunken daze after yet more partying and over indulgence of drugs and gets a bit jealous of his boyfriend's American friend. Dean's boyfriend gets mad at him for being rude to his best friend. Dean doesn't really care and so he continues to try and seek satisfaction elsewhere, and his boyfriend keeps trying to work things out with him.
Later on Dean calms down and through the help of his boyfriend tries to convince the American singer to collaborate with his 2 girlfriends in order to help them get their band going better. She agrees to help Dean's friends, and so the girls' manage to get a recording deal.
Then while the album is being produced Dean's boyfriend decides that all of them need a break from the hectic pace of the city life so that they can all have a chance to try to work through their problems. So Dean's boyfriend rents a house on the beach and all of them go down there for a vacation.
During their time there the 2 girl band members hook up with one another and work out their differences. The American singer tells the others about her past and a boyfriend she left behind. Somehow this boyfriend manages to track her down though, even managing to make it all the way to the beach house where they are staying. The singer and her boyfriend work things out and get engaged. Dean also tries to work things out with his boyfriend and finally manages to succeed and decides that he is ready to be in a committed relationship. There is a kiss between Dean and his boyfriend, and the movie ends with Dean and his boyfriend half naked in bed together, implying that they had make-up sex. There is nothing bad in this last part of the movie unless you are really anti-gay, in which case I don't know why you would have bothered to watch this much of the movie anyway. There is also a nice scene thrown in where we get to Dean's naked backside Not necessary really, but a nice tidbit for all Dean's fans to be sure...hehe
Ok, now on to the 2nd movie that Dean has done more recently - Snakeskin. This is a more recent movie that actually came out on dvd earlier this year. This movie stars Dean and Melanie Lynskey, who plays the main female character Alice. In this movie Dean's character Craig (also called Johnny, by Alice) and Alice are 2 young adults who are seeking adventure in suburban New Zealand/Australia ? (not exactly sure where this is supposed to take place). For some reason Alice is obsessed with old American western movies. She finds cowboys exciting and longs for a life of adventure. So she and Johnny (Dean) like to drive around picking up hitchhikers for fun.
Usually they don't pick up anybody particularly exciting, but then one day they pick up an American by the name of Seth, who just happens to be dressed in a southern cowboy style attire. Needless to say Alice is intrigued by this American and finds him incredibly handsome. So she starts asking him all kinds of questions and tells him that she and Johnny will take him wherever he needs to go.
This turns especially convenient for Seth since when they are getting a bit to eat at a small coffee shop, Seth is confronted by 3 mean skinheads who are after him. They chase Seth, Alice and Johnny out of the coffee shop, and so our heroes race to get away from the skinheads and eventually manage to lose them.
However it is shortly after that they find themselves being followed by 2 hippies in an ice cream truck...lol. One of the hippies turns out to be none other than Young Hercules' own Jodie Rimmer (aka, Lilith). She & her boyfriend are chasing after Seth because he stole a large amount of weed from them that he promised to help them sell.
Needless to say, from this point on this turns into another one of Dean's movies that just seems to get weirder and make less sense as it goes on. There are some funny senses where Seth, Alice & Johnny smoke some of the weed, as well as some funny/weird scenes with Jodie & her boyfriend, and you also get some insight into the 3 skinheads who are after Seth.
Eventually our 3 heroes end up a at suburban club, where all of the main characters in the movie eventually end up. Alice & Seth sneak off into a disgusting bathroom and end up having sex (not graphic in this movie thankfully, mind you). Poor Johnny overhears and is heartbroken though because he has always loved Alice. *Sigh* Poor Dean.
Finally the skinheads and the hippies team up to confront Seth. Johnny threatens them with a gun that Seth had been carrying and they take off again. So the hippies and the skinheads pursue them. There is a scene where our heroes are almost caught, but the skinheads and the hippies get into an accident with one another while trying to catch our heroes. The hippies ice cream truck is ruined, and one of the skinheads dies in the crash. Jodie & her boyfriend part ways at this point and neither are seen again. While our heroes get away and the 2 remaining skinheads are still determined to catch Seth.
The movie only gets darker from here though. Major spoiler up ahead. Do not read if you don't want to know how this ends.
Ok, having warned you yet again, you have only yourself to blame now. By this point Johnny is really scared and wants to call their adventure quits. Alice wants to do as Johnny says, but both of them are scared to act because Seth is now driving and has his gun. But Johnny won't let up, so Seth tells him that there is only one way to settle this - they will each take a turn with the gun and have one shot at each other. They do things the winner's way. So they park the car and Seth offers Johnny the first shot. Unfortunately Johnny isn't a good shot and misses. Then Seth takes his turn with the gun and shoots Johnny in the chest. Needless to say Johnny dies. I told you this got dark, didn't I?
At this point Alice is now freaking out and at first refuses to believe that Johnny is dead. Seth tells her that now they have to do things his way if they are going to survive. Alice doesn't want to anymore, but Seth threatens to kill her if she doesn't. This leads to a brief scene where Seth takes Alice to a gas station and forces Alice to rob it. He then tells her that they have to dump Johnny's body. Somehow they manage to find a meat factory and Seth wants to leave Johnny's body with the dead pigs. At this point Alice has had enough, and runs as fast as she can in fear. Seth chases her through the meat factory and eventually catches up with her. Luckily for Alice however Seth is confronted by the 2 skinheads. Seth makes the skinheads turn on each other though, and one of them kills the other. Seth then finishes off the remaining skinhead and continues chasing after Alice. Alice however, still has Seth's gun, and one bullet that she kept hidden. Knowing she has only one shot she manages to make it a good one and kills Seth.
In the final scene Alice puts Johnny's body in her car and pushes it off a cliffside, and it falls down on the rocky shore of a nearby beach and explodes. We then see Alice wearing Seth's snakeskin jacket as she walks along the highway, looking for someone to pick her up, and here the movie ends.
Overall I enjoyed both of these movies. Clearly though neither of them are for the faint of heart. Plus you kind've have to overlook some of the strangeness of these movies, which I think is mainly due to some poor writing.
You can find both of these movies on dvd at either amazon or ebay. I highly recommend them for any and all Dean fans.
I would love to hear anyone else's thoughts on these movies or other movies that Dean has been in.
